Why Crime Scene Investigations Fail

When crimes are committed, those responding to the crime scenes are tasked with extraordinary responsibilities. These responsibilities focus on identifying, collecting, documenting, and preserving the evidence that connects the offender(s) to both the scene and victims. Identifying those involved and securing the physical or biological evidence to make arrests and seek convictions is critical. Crime Scene Investigators (CSIs) have one opportunity to locate and secure that evidence, and those performing the duties of the CSI must have the proper education and specialized training to complete each task. It is also critical that law enforcement agencies develop and adhere to minimum qualifications in filling CSI positions. It is their duty and responsibility to provide the best possible service for their respective communities, and the criminal justice system. Every crime victim deserves justice, just as those victimizing innocent people deserve justice. Failed investigations prevent justice and allow offenders to remain free to victimize others.
